Help divide and conquer the trash

clean up dayIt’s time for a little spring cleaning—Texas style. Are you tired of looking at the trash along the streets and highways? Well, now is your chance to do something about it. In conjunction with the “Keep Texas Beautiful” and the “Don’t Mess with Texas” campaigns, Carthage Main Street and the City are sponsoring a clean-up day for Carthage on Saturday, April 28, from 10:00 am – 1:00 pm. Marking the third year for this campaign, local residents, along with civic organizations and businesses, are asked to come help tackle the job of de-trashing the city.  Volunteers should meet at City Hall at 10:00 am to divide and conquer the trash.  The City will provide gloves, trash bags, reflective vests and any other necessary supplies.

Staying Close to Home was Important

Reverend J.T. Harris celebrates 35 years as pastor

j.t. harrisReverend J.T. Harris always liked being close to home. He grew up in the Longstreet-Keatchie area and went to the Rosewald School. The school only went up to the 8th grade, so he transferred to Logansport and graduated from there in 1969. He didn’t have money to go to college, so he joined the Navy. He recalls, “I went into the military wanting to be the ‘bad boy,’ the typical stereotyped sailor, but it didn’t work. I remember vividly one night I decided I would get drunk. I got some beer, wine, and whisky and set it on the table in front of me. I sat there, staring at it, and finally told myself ‘I don’t belong here.’ I never took a drink of it. My attempt at being ‘bad’ didn’t work.”

Michelle recalled, “We had tried for so long, we were just about ready to give up and save money to adopt.” At a six weeks’ checkup, a sonogram was performed and little “dots” showed up on the screen. “We were so nervous. The doctor, nurse and nurse practitioner were all huddled around the screen whispering to each other.
