Country Music Weekend

The third weekend in August brings Country Music to the forefront in Carthage, Texas. Beginning Friday, August 17, with the John Ritter Tribute Showcase, 30 finalists will vie for the chance to be a part of the Texas Country Music Hall of Fame “Texas Tour.” Emcee for the event is 2009 Hall of Fame Inductee and Panola County native, Linda Davis. Last year’s winner, Holly Tucker, will perform on stage as well as winners from previous years. Tommie Ritter Smith says, “This year’s talent is the best we’ve ever had. It’ll be hard for the judges to pick a winner.” The Showcase begins at 7:00pm at the Carthage Civic Center. Admission is $15.

Next on the agenda is the Tex Ritter Roundup, Saturday, August 18, beginning at 8:00am at the Texas Country Music Hall of Fame. The Tex Ritter Museum will be open for tours at no charge, and the gift shop will be stocked with lots of specialty items for the country music lover. According to Smith, “Our gift shop has some wonderful Texas-themed items for sale as well as music from many of our Hall of Fame inductees.” At 9:00am, the day’s music will begin with a performance by the Dusty Boots band. The featured event of the day, the Texaco Country Showdown competition, kicks off at 10:00am. Sponsored by KGAS Radio, solo artists will compete for $1000 in prize money and a chance to compete at the state level. Details for the competition can be found on the KGAS website. Deadline for entries is August 10.

Performing Saturday evening at the Texas Country Music Hall of Fame Show will be an all-star lineup of some of country music’s greatest legends. The lineup includes Jim Ed Brown, T. Graham Brown, Helen Cornelius, David Frizzell, Johnny Rodriguez, Jeannie Seely, and T.G. Sheppard. Emcees for the show will include Disc Jockey Hall of Fame inductees. The show begins at 7:00pm. Tickets are $60 and will be available at the door. “Because we’re using the Civic Center this year, we still have seats available. I’m expecting to hear from other friends of the show we’ve met through the years to add to the already great lineup that we are having,” commented Smith. “This is the first year we’ve been able to sell tickets at the door because the new venue has double the amount of seating. We’re also having a ‘Country Gospel Show’ on Sunday morning starting at 9:30am at the Texas Country Music Hall of Fame featuring some special guests.” If you love Country Music, Carthage, Texas, is the place to be in August!
