Fighting back against cancer

Participating in Relay for Life is a great way to join other community members in the fight against cancer. The annual kick-off is just around the corner with committee members making big plans for the upcoming Relay event. This year’s theme is “Give Cancer the Boot.” Anyone interested in joining the effort, or just wanting to find out more about it, is invited to attend the kick-off on January 17, 2014, from 6:00 pm to 9:00 pm.

Held at the Texas Country Music Hall of Fame, the Relay Committee will be introduced and will share plans for the upcoming Relay.  Food, fun and entertainment are on the schedule for the evening as well as awards and recognition of the sponsors and the 2013 teams. “This is our second year at the Hall of Fame,” says event Co-Chairman Tracy Anderson. “We packed the house last year and we hope to do it again in our efforts to ‘fight back against cancer.”

The actual Relay for Life event is scheduled for May 2, 2014, at the Carthage Civic Center. Team participation, fundraising and spirit are what makes Relay for Life a success. If interested in signing up to compete in the relay, register at the website or contact one of the organizers: Brandi Peace, Event Chair, 903.754.2548, Tracy Anderson, Event Co-Chair, 903.692.0885.

According to “While the American Cancer Society is making progress toward a world without cancer, only with your dedication and fundraising efforts can we finish the fight against this disease.” In 2013 Panola County Relay raised over $90,000 in the effort to help fight cancer. The goal for this year is to surpass that amount. Plans are in the works for bake sales, raffles, fishing, softball and volleyball tournaments and much more. “Please come out and join us as we kick-off the 2014 Relay for Life,” remarks Anderson. “We plan to Celebrate, Remember, Fight Back!”
